The mythical meets the real in Mucha's nationalistic image announcing a pageant to accompany the quadrennial Sokol athletic competition. "The young Sokols in the foreground are real, the female figure giving them her blessing is the mythical Slavia, personifying the Slavic fraternity." (Rennert / Weill p. 362) This poster was originally issued with a text banner (not present) which explained the details of the four-day event, including the information that Mucha was the artistic director. Toward the end of his career Mucha shied away from the Art Nouveau style which had garnered him so much fame at the turn of the century, and he began to focus more on nationalist, Slavic topics. Still, many of his recognizable design elements are visible here, such as the decorative border of gold leaves and the woman's flowing gown. Lendl p. 289, Rennert / Weill 109.
